James 1:22-24 “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to God’s word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.”
Why does James compare obeying God’s word with looking in a mirror? Because it is God’s word that tells us who we are. When our identity is established in His Word, it influences our attitudes, the way we talk, our behavior, the way we interact with others… Everything about the way we live in this world! But obeying God is not something we force ourselves to do, it flows out of a love relationship.
The more you love someone, the more you want to do what pleases them, even if it costs you. A healthy love relationship builds up, and makes you a better person. That’s why God first wants us to be rooted in His love. When we are secure in His love we become fearless and confident. His love brings healing to the wounds in our soul and from pain inflicted by thoughtless actions of others. We become whole so that we can bring healing to others, instead of passing on more pain.
A person can go through a traumatic past but when God’s love washes all the filth, brings healing to all the pain, takes away all condemnation, that person can touch the world around him in a way that only God’s love can… Spreading the love, peace and joy that he experienced and leaving others amazed with how wonderful our Abba truly is!
