I Have All That I Need

Psalm 23:1 “The Lord is my Shepherd, I have all that I need.”

David, the psalmist used the name of the Lord as Jehovah, the covenant name of God. He was reminding himself that his Shepherd is the One Who made a covenant promise ages ago through Abraham, that He is the One Who will care for him, and in this particular instance, as a Shepherd. A shepherd, no matter how many sheep he has in his herd, knows each sheep specifically. A shepherd anticipates the needs of his sheep and always keeps their well-being in mind. He feeds them, makes sure they have enough rest. He keeps them healthy, provides protection from predators, talks to them, that’s why they know his voice. One of the definitions of shepherd also is “special friend”. A special friend is a best friend. He is someone you like to hang out with, to talk and have discussions with, someone you open your heart to because you trust him. You do not have to question their faithfulness and loyalty because you know he is someone you can count on. That is the kind of Shepherd we have in Jehovah, that’s why ALL our needs are met. But just as a friend doesn’t want to be taken for granted, seek His company. Talk to Him. Listen to Him. He is your Shepherd. He loves you.

“Abba, I desire to know You more. Reveal Yourself to me as my Shepherd. I want to become more familiar with Your voice so that You are the One I follow always. I thank You that You look out for me, care and provide for me. Thank You for Your great love for me that You have shown through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.”
