Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
We might say that the shepherd’s presence did not eliminate the presence of evil, but certainly eliminates the fear of evil. His presence meant their comfort and protection because he carried 2 things with him: the rod and staff.
The shepherd’s rod was used for beating off animals that threatened the welfare of the sheep. While the staff was used to gently guide and discipline the sheep along the right path. To the sheep, the only important thing was that they kept their focus on their shepherd, and the shepherd took care of everything else.
“Jesus, what comfort and assurance it brings to my heart that my welfare is Your concern. All I have to do is keep my eyes on You and the path You want me to walk on. I don’t have to be afraid of anything as long as I know I am following You. Keep me in the path that I should go and I will live for You all the days of my life. You are my Shepherd and I am Your sheep. Amen.”
