A Table Before Me In My Enemies’ Presence

Psalm 23:5 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

The verse speaks of overflowing provision and triumph even in the midst of threatening circumstances. To sit as a guest at the table of a host in the Middle East was to be assured of food, housing, fellowship and protection. A table prepared in the presence of a guest’s enemies is a public announcement not to harass the guest in any way. The amount of security a host provided depended on his prestige and power. The abundance on the table indicated how prosperous, powerful and generous he was. To have the hospitality of such a host was to be secure indeed!

From Shepherd to Host, the change of imagery was meant to show how our God is. He is powerful and wealthy, yet He took it upon Himself to have responsibility over our welfare. Our peace is important to Him.’; that’s why we can sit at His table, eat without stress the banquet prepared for us, knowing that nothing will happen for as long as He watches over us.

“You are not just my Shepherd and my Host, You are my Daddy-God! How marvelous it is to know how much my welfare concerns You. All my needs are important to You. Thank You for loving me always, and for giving me a new life in Christ Jesus. Amen.”
