Exodus 10:21-23 “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Lift your hand toward heaven, and the land of Egypt will be covered with a darkness so thick you can feel it.’ So Moses lured his hand to the sky, and a deep darkness covered the entire land of Egypt for 3 days. During all that time the people could not see each other, and no one moved. But there was light as usual where the people of Israel lived.”
This was the 9th plague that hit Egypt already. Every one of the plagues had been targeted against a false god that the Egyptians worshipped and now it was against the sun god. Jehovah was also displaying to His own people His power to show them “I am the ONLY One True God”. They were living in Egypt for over 400 years and He wanted them to know without any shadow of doubt that no one was more powerful than Him. The Egyptians’ god was supposed to be in charge of light but he couldn’t overcome the darkness. It was a false light. It says that the darkness was so thick it could be felt and no one dared to move! Movement for them could mean hitting something and hurting themselves so they stayed put. The darkness was so thick any fire they tried to light just got swallowed up. Nothing worked! Fear paralyzed the whole nation!
After Jesus died on the Cross, darkness fell on the land for 3 hours. God was making a statement to everyone. And that’s why after that people started to remark, “surely, He was the Son of God.” In Egypt, everyone knew the Israelites’ God was the powerful One! Living in darkness is what life is like when God is not present. People in fear and confusion and groping around because they cannot see. But just as the Israelites still had light, in Christ we live in the light. Jesus made a way for us to live life with direction, in peace, in fullness. Our lives can make a difference in the darkness as we let our light shine.
“Thank You Abba, that we don’t have to live like the rest of the world, in fear not knowing what’s going to happen next. You gave us Your light to shine wherever we go and we don’t have to fear anything because You hold our tomorrows. Teach us to make each day count, to know You more so that our light shines more brightly. Thank You for Jesus Who made a way for us to live in Your light, Your glory. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”
